Opposition to Migration of Phoenix Trees
Anchor: Nanjing Municipal Government decided to cut off hundreds of phoenix trees,70 to 80 years old, for the construction of the #3 Metro line. This has caused public opposition. Citizens are organizing a walk on March 19 to protect the trees. They said: “We believe those trees that survived the Nanjing massacre can survive the subway." Authorities are very nervous about this, and began to control related comments.
Last week, many phoenix trees planted 70 to 80 years ago were suddenly "beheaded" or "tipped over" to give way to the #3 Metro Line Daxing Palace Station. Nanjing citizens were very unhappy seeing the trees they knew since childhood to be destroyed like this.
Some netizens initiated via blog a 3-month activity "to save the Nanjing Phoenix Trees.” Some appealed "Follow your heart, love my Nanjing Phoenix Trees Protection Activities." It calls upon a sit-in activity on the square in front of the city library at 3pm, on March 19, with green ribbons tied to their hands. As of March 14 more than 11,000 people signed up, including many Mainland film and cultural celebrities.
Nanjing Government is very nervous. The netizen who initiated activities was called to the police station to talk. Some online messages, including those on todu.com have been removed. Netizens of sina.com published a posting on the evening of March 14: "Meetings to maintain stability were held today at universities in Nanjing, asking students, graduates, and teachers in schools to not participate in the activities to protect the trees! These officials only know to threaten people with their status and job."
Netizens interpret why the Nanjing government destroyed the trees: "Nanjing held the 2005 National Games, so the venues are all new. For the Youth Olympic Games in 2014, there is no reason to engage in massive constructions. But how would the officials get high GDP without construction? The only project left is subway, with a tight timeline and an aggressive goal, to open before 2014. Tunneling is too slow? Let's dig openly! Destroying some trees is nothing. "
The big trees along the street from Zhongshan Pier to Zhongshan Gate and Zhongshan Mausoleum were part of the Fengan Road when Sun Yat-sen was buried, with 50 years of history. It is not only a typical scene of Nanjing, but also has important historical and cultural significance. Therefore, this incident also caused concern from Taiwan. Taiwan legislator, Chiu Yi, published his message on March 15 on Facebook and blogs to express his will to protect the trees. He called for respect from both sides of the Taiwan Straight to the shared history, culture, and memory.
Five years ago, Nanjing government migrated 190 phoenix trees for the #2 Metro Line construction. The garden department promised the citizens that 80% of the transplanted trees will survive. In fact, many of the moved trees are "miserable” in the nursery. The survival rate is not high. Only 15 of the 83 transplanted trees survived in Baixia District.
